This painting marks a significant departure from my previous work in that the significant focus is now on the armour, ornament, art and architecture of Ancient Rome, a subject that has fascinated me since I was around 9-10 years old.
Previous to this work the main focus had been on Islamic/Arabic art and architecture. These do continue to feature in some of my work at the moment (smaller paintings and some drawings) but, for now, ancient Rome is where my head and heart is.
In this painting, aside from revelling in the intricacy/detail of the armour/helmets etc. I've also begun to place more emphasis on the sky, particularly the clouds, rather than leaving them a plain blue. The clouds, in a way, are like natural ornament.
